Happy Monday! After a beautiful weekend I’m back being up early and heading to work at the hospital. This morning I woke up super hungry…..well actually I always wake up hungry. Some people say, but first…coffee, but for me to get anything done, it’s but first… breakfast! One of my favourite things to add to my breakfasts are Chia seeds, which are, yes, the same seeds that grow those grassy plant décor or what you may know as the “chia pet”. Who knew that Ch ch ch Chia, are actually packed with nutrients that promote health and help decrease the signs of aging???
Chia seeds come from the plant Salvia Hispanic, which is a member of the mint family. Their popularity has rightly grown with their rich nutritional profile. And you only have to eat a little to get a lot out of them!
I love these seeds. They help keep me full longer with their good source of fibre and protein, and help decrease blood sugar spikes after eating. Bye bye afternoon sugar crash! Fibre also helps your body with its natural detoxification and digestive health, both essentials for a healthy glow.
To add to Chia seeds’ beauty bio, these little guys are stock full of antioxidants that can help fight off damaging free radicals in the body that are detrimental to youthful looking skin. They are also a source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) an essential Omega-3 fatty acid that can help reduce inflammation and support youthful glowing skin.
There is a list of things that you can do with Chia seeds. I don’t recommend just eating them dry by the spoon full. I like adding them to smoothies, cereals, yogurt, in baking, overnight oats and chia seed jam. Minor warning, they are notorious for getting stuck in your teeth so do a check before sharing your beautiful smile!
Here is a recipe for an amazing Chia Seed Jam to enjoy with high fibre toast!
Raw Chia Seed Jam
2 cups fruit of your choice (if using frozen, let thaw first) Amp up the antioxidants with berries!
2 Tbsp chia seeds
1 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
¼ tsp vanilla (optional)
Optional: stevia, maple syrup, or honey to taste (fruit may give you enough sweetness!)
Add all ingredients into a blender. Blend until jam-like consistency. Transfer into jar and refrigerate or enjoy right away on sprouted whole grain toast. Jam will last in refrigerator up to a week.
Make your week amazing!
