Here are a couple things that changed in my diet over the last few years…protein and fat. I used to be really consumed in calories and reading labels for low calorie foods, but now in addition to focusing on the quality of my foods, I also began focusing more on ensuring that I’m getting enough protein and not being afraid of fats.
Proteins are a very important part of the diet for our health and for our beauty. Over the last couple years I have made sure that I am including a source of protein with each of my meals and snacks. Since this is a nutrient that takes longer to digest, it helps stabilize my blood sugars and keeps me full longer – bye bye cravings! It is also essential for healthy hair, nails and skin, so a shoe in as part of my beauty diet!
Fats are quite new to my diet…Because I was an avid calorie “watcher,” fats were the devil. Low fat diets for weight loss used to be all the rage because of fats high calorie content. The things is, these diets turned people (including myself) to highly processed and highly refined carbs (sugars) eh hem 100 cal snack packs…and turned us away from really healthy foods such as nuts, avocados, olives! (I would never eat these before!) The right type of fats are definitely essential for health and beauty (so are high fibre carbs but that post is for another day), but I always still recommend watching your portions as calories can add up fast from fats. Now I’m ensuring that I have a small serving of healthy fats with my meals like quarter to half an avocado! …I still don’t like olives though 😛
We’ll talk more about the specific macronutrients and their part in out youthful looks in upcoming posts. For now, try out this super yummy smoothie bowl that has a good source of protein, healthy fats and natural carbs! Other notable beauty nutrients this bowl has includes Vitamin C, iron (hey guess what? the vitamin c helps you absorb the iron!), Vitamin E, Omega 3 fatty acids, Calcium, Vitamin D, B Vitamins, and fibre!
